Oasis split?

Having pulled their V Festival headlining slot at the last minute last weekend, Oasis have repeated the trick at the Rock En Seine festival after a fight between Noel and Liam just moments before they were due on stage. According to Amy McDonald, writing on Twitter, the singer smashed Noel’s guitar with the result that the big screens were announcing the band’s cancellation due to ‘an altercation’. NME is reporting that the band has split and State hears that their tour manager confirmed this from the stage.

Meanwhile Noel Gallagher has posted this statement on the band’s website:

“It’s with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight. People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.

“Apologies to all the people who bought tickets for the shows in Paris, Konstanz and Milan.”

    They rightly get their fair share of stick, but Oasis were the band that introduced me to good music through ‘Morning Glory’ all those years ago. I’ll always owe them that, even if things only went downhill from there. A sad night.

    Like James, ‘Morning Glory’ started me off on the path to decent music. Their early material was, and still is, excellent but their decline started with the horribly over-produced ‘Be Here Now’ and got progressively worse from there. They actually should have called it a day a few years ago.

    It’ll be interesting to see where the Brothers Gallagher go from here. I’ve no doubt Noel will try his hand at another musical project. But, while I’ve no crystal ball, there’s only two ways I can see Liam going: trying to keep Oasis going as a sort of tribute band doing the rounds on the summer festival circuit (kinda like Echo & The Bunnymen); or living out his days in his ivory tower, with only the odd paparazzi photo of him giving the fingers appearing in the tabloids to remind us he’s still out there…

    In a way, I’m actually quite looking forward to finding out what Noel does solo (and I really hope it’s something…). There was always a slight feeling that Liam held him back. It might be too late for anything great now, but we shall see.

    I’m off to play ‘Morning Glory’ and wallow in nostalgia.

    I’m actually well sad at this news – more so than any other band-split I can remember. They may have lost something, but they were Oasis. They were the first new band that I personally found where there was something undeniably special…and there’s something undeniably special about that in its self.

    Yeah, you know Noel will always be fine. Even at Slane this year it felt better when he took vocal duties…but still, I thought ‘Dig Out Your Soul’ was a decent record. There was fluff there, but it wasn’t a bad album at all. Noel’s said it could have been better – blaming Liam for refusing to come to the studio until the last week of recording – as holding up some finer tunes. And, you know, I liked ‘Be Here Now’. Over-produced for sure, but boy did it have some cracking tunes. I LOVE the attitude of ‘D’ya Know What I mean’ and how good did ‘My Big Mouth’ sound this summer?!

    I’m holding my hand up. They may have been past it (don’t mention ‘Standing On…..’, but it’s a sad day for rock music. OASIS!

    All good things must come to an end.Oasis have been treading water since “What’s The Story,Morning Glory”. Even so,they made two great albums which did much to put British Rock’n Roll back on the worldstage after years of underachieving.
    Anybody who was forced to listen to the likes of Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine,Cud and The Wonder Stuff will know exactly what I mean.

    I saw them perform at Earl’s Court back in 1995 and they were superb.

    If you don’t like “Rock’n'Roll Star”, you are either dead or a Michael Bolton fan….

    Maybe Liam was right – maybe Noel’s just having a ‘Man Period’.
    The split mightnt do them any hgarm in fairness.

    they will be sadly missed.music for a generation. wonder will noel go solo and liam carry on himself.cn them 9 times in concert,in 96 in cork and slane this year.
