Mercury Prize – Place Your Bets

Tonight sees the annual awarding of the Mercury Music Prize with its now traditionally eclectic list of nominees. Following the victory of bookies’ favourite Elbow last year, the judges may well plump for something a little more left field but the general consensus seems to be that the prize will go to a female artist in general and Florence Welch in particular. If I was a betting man I’d go for Florence and her machine, though personally I think it’s all hype, especially after seeing her live performance at Reading on the BBC (hugely out of tune).

I’d like to see Friendly Fires win it. Who knows with these judges though. I rarely feel they get it right, but what do I know!

I remember thinking on a similar page on this site last year that Radiohead were a shoo-in, but Elbow took the plaudits that day, I think its Florence and the Machine all the way this year though!

Can see Florence and her machine taking it though.

Then again, looking at the list of pervious winners, I wouldn’t agree with any of the choices since Gomez’s win.

I’m thinking it’ll be either Florence and Friendly Fires; although you never know, the fact that La Roux and Kasabian were nominated is rather questionable.

The Horrors for me, it’s my album of the year so far. I like Florence but hype + a half decent album doesn’t beat a work of greatness.

Reckon it’s gonna be La Roux. Florence is just a little too much of an obvious choice. Think I might stick a few bob on that, though I do think the Horrors album is great.
