What can you say about a man who gets a standing ovation as he slides onto a dark stage before the lights go up? The audience in the, newly created, Ratcellar in Phoenix Park last night were certainly there to enjoy themselves and Tom Waits did not let them down.

From his opening Lucinda medley to his encore Down, Down, Down he enthralled the appreciative fans with a mixture of vaudeville and Berlin cabaret which included stomping numbers like Way down in the hole.

Standing on a box that emitted dust every time he stamped his feet, his stamping also sounded a number of percussion items including a cowbell. It was more of a show than a concert. His movements to the music sometimes resembled a robotic scarecrow with St Vitus Dance.

The band gave full vent to the clipped style of the songs and included a number of haunting solos on saxophone, piano and guitar.

Tom moved to the piano to the sound of rapturous applause and delivered four sublime songs from the past interspersed with some bizarre jokes. Tom Traubert’s Blues, On the Nickle and Christmas card from a Hooker in Minneapolis led to a sing along version of Innocent when you dream.

Back to the stomping and the highlight of the night Lost in the Bottom of the World with a purple hued lighting backdrop.

The final song, Make it Rain, was followed by an encore including an animated Eyeball Kid accompanied by Tom donning a bowler hat of mirror fragments to give us the effect of the spinning mirror ball in our dancing days in the South County Hotel.

Glitter fell from the rafters and it was all over.
