Mercury Music Prize shortlist

Adele

The shortlist for this year’s Mercury Music Prize was announced today in London.

Here is the list:

Adele – 19
British Sea Power – Do You Like Rock Music?
Burial – Untrue
Elbow – The Seldom Seen Kid
Estelle – Shine
Laura Marling – Alas I Cannot Swim
Neon Neon – Stainless Style
Portico Quartet – Knee-Deep In The North Sea
Robert Plant And Alison Krauss – Raising Sand
Radiohead – In Rainbows
Rachel Unthank And The Winterset – The Bairns
The Last Shadow Puppets – The Age Of The Understatement

Token Folk – Rachel Unthank (Who happens to be good). Token Jazz – Portico Quartet. Covered

So what is criminally missing? What genuinely good British albums deserve to be on the list? Jamie Lidell’s Jim? Foals – Antidotes? A glaring omission is Portishead’s – Third in our book. Will Burial run away with it? Will he turn up?

I can’t believe Adele’s album made the list. It’s sloppy at best, plus Duffy’s is far better for the same genre.

Great to see Neon Neon on there. It’s an underrated beauty of an album.

But I’m pinning my hopes on Laura Marling. Just fantastic.

I definitely would have put Jamie Lidell and Foals in the running. Also, Hot Chip – Made In The Dark. I don’t know if it says more about me or about the selection that I’ve only heard of a few of them. Probably me actually. But of the ones I’ve heard from this list, I don’t think I’ve listened to any of the albums all the way through. With the possible exception of Neon Neon. In conclusion, I don’t think much of it.
