Polly Scattergood, Crawdaddy, Dublin
Polly Scattergood played an intensely emotional and incredibly fun set in Crawdaddy…to a crowd of about 30 people. It is disappointing, because Polly and her band are so deserving of a much larger crowd.
Her music mixes pop with hints of electro, but not so much that it could be compared with any of the electro pop acts that have become so popular over the past year. Her voice isn’t pop. It’s different. It’s vulnerable, moving immediately from soaring crescendos into quivering whispers and spoken word. Her vocal style is reminiscent of Kate Bush, but her lyrics are a lot simpler. There’s not a whole lot of metaphor or mystery. However, bizarrely, that’s what makes her songs so visceral and genuine. She’s dark and haunting but still quite danceable, thanks to a controlled amount of synth and looping.
While last night’s show was the last of this tour, it’s nice to see that she and the band have a few dates lined up on this year’s festival circuit. State guarantees that you’ll be hearing more of her name and her music after this summer. Here’s hoping that her next gig in Dublin definitely won’t be so criminally overlooked. For the moment though, most Irish music fans missed out on an intense but ultimately uplifting experience.

I was one of the lucky few, having only heard of Polly the day before. And I was very glad to be there. I’m certain there will be a lot more fans there the next time, as word gets out of what they missed. I look forward to it.
