They Might Be Giants – Summer Camp

They Might Be Giants – Summer Camp

In recent times, as if kicking back at a culture where recognition and fame are a primary goal, a string of artists have held back on revealing their identities in favour of putting their art/music first. One of the most famous examples being Burial, now known to be William Bevan, remained anonymous for over two years so that his music could be measured on its own merits and perhaps not compared to his school mates Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard or Kieran Hebden (Four Tet), or indeed other peers. Gothenburg’s jj are another example, but at least we know that they are soon releasing a second album (jj no. 3) and are from Sweden.

This is more than we know about Summer Camp, their myspace states that they hail from the UK, earlier blog rumours give them Scandinavian and US links, but The Guardian have on “good authority” that they are a boy-girl duo from London. The band also say “We met at summer camp when we were fourteen. The nights went on forever and we thought we would never get old.” And that’s it.

Do we care? Yes we do.

Summer Camp, whoever they are, make music that is perfectly evocative of their name; wistful indie-pop with an electronic flair and breezy girl-group vocals as can be heard on ‘Ghost Train’.

Their dewy version of Flamingos ‘I Only Have Eyes For You’, sampling Heathers the movie, is pop-perfection.

Just this month we’ve stumbled across what seems to be the first remix of Active Child’s ‘Voice of an Old Friend’, and a fine job they did too (more on Active Child soon).

The band release their first official single on Moshi Moshi this coming March but let’s hope we hear a lot more about Summer Camp this year, well at least their music.
