Muse take Best Art Vinyl prize 2009

ArtVinyl has announced the winner of Best Art Vinyl for 2009 and it goes to Muse’s album The Resistance. The sleeve was designed by La Boca.

Runner-up artwork included Manic Street Preachers’ Journal For Plague Lovers and Fever Ray’s self titled album.

Andrew Heeps, Art Vinyl’s director had this to say:

2009 has been a particularly fantastic year for the award as we have seen lots of new talent mixing with some of the well known names of the sleeve design and the art world such as the Tom Hingston Studio, Farrow Design, Designers Republic, Rankin, Damian Hirst and Jenny Saville. Some of the sleeves have also required whole teams for the design such as for Florence and the Machine album who’s credits include Tabitha Denholm, Hugh Frost, Tom Beard and Orlando Weeks for their respective work as Art Director, Layout Designer, Photographer and Illustrator for just that one sleeve.

We’re looking at a year when vinyl sales have increased again by over 30% and with CD sales losing their importance the canvas a vinyl record sleeve provides is really adding value for the owner as they are also purchasing a piece of collectable art. Also both the majors and indie labels are investing money in really stand-out sleeve art.

Last year the award was given to Fleet Foxes’ debut album sleeve.
