Mercury Music Prize 2010 shortlist announced

Congratulations are due to Conor O’ Brien and friends in Villagers for their nomination for the Mercury Music Prize. The shortlist was announced a short time ago this morning in London.

The list is:

Biffy Clyro – Only Revolutions
Corinne Bailey Rae – The Sea
Dizzee Rascal – Tongue N’ Cheek
Kit Downes Trio – Golden
Foals – Total Life Forever
I Am Kloot – Sky At Night
Laura Marling – I Speak Because I Can
Mumford And Sons – Sigh No More
Paul Weller – Wake Up The Nation
Villagers – Becoming A Jackal
Wild Beasts – Two Dancers
The XX – XX

The winner will be announced on September 7th.

    Wow, better than expected. Somehow, can’t see past Mumford and songs cleaning up. But nice to see Wild Beasts and The xx getting nominations for wonderful albums. And of course, Conor and the lads.

    Is it really necessary to have Irish artists as part of this award ceremony when we already have the Choice Music Prize and the organizers of the Mercury awards refuse to recognize Ireland as a separate entity and instead lump Irish artists into the Best Album of 2010 from a UK or British Isles artist… a whole load of shit and worse the Irish music industry support the Mercury awards idiots.

    It’s not the best award in the world, but Im sure the Irish acts who get nominated arent bothered, Zane? Villagers getting some good publicity in the UK can hardly be a bad thing for them, surely?

    James why is the UK market so important Villagers can hold their own outside Ireland or the UK…

    I didnt say it was any more important than any other market, but it’s still free publicity, there’s no down side for them really is there? I mean I doubt they’re actively looking not to be known in the UK, and they just got the best bit of publicity they’ve probably ever had in that market. Loads of people will listen to the album now, and at the end of the day it’s a market of 60 million, that’s a fair bit of potential.

    I’ve had at two Dublin acts in the past six months tell me in interview that they consider the UK market MORE important than the Irish market (I wont name them, it seems unfair), so I hardly think Villagers are going to be complaining about getting free publicity. Loads of people anywhere can only be a good thing, surely?
