Last night saw the airing of the first show in the second series of Community of Independents. Fronted by State’s own Danny Carroll, it featured a live acoustic performance in studio by Katie Kim, an interview and live performance captured at the Joyful Slog launch in the Button Factory by No Spill Blood, The Spook of The Thirteenth Lock, a look at a maker pedal building workshop last Sunday and chat with Annie and Padraig from Tieranniesaur. Dublin Writers Festival, which takes place June 4th-10th will feature a few music-related events. We have a few tickets to giveaway for Josh Ritter’s conversation with Sinead Gleeson about his debut novel June 4th, Mike Scott’s reading of his memoir June 7th, and James Fearnley’s live performance June 8th.

Billy Bragg & Andy Irvine to celebrate Woody Guthrie’s Centenary at Vicar Street

This year is the 100th anniversary of Woody Guthrie‘s birth , and to celebrate the American folk legend, Billy Bragg and Andy Irvine are set to play a special gig at Vicar Street on September 17th.

Billy Bragg will perform new songs using lyrics from Woody Guthrie’s unreleased tracks.

Planningtorock to perform DJ/vocal set at The Button Factory

Berlin-based UK electro artist Janine Rostron aka Planningtorock is set to perform a DJ set at The Button Factory June 1st.

The night which kicks off the Forbidden Fruit Bank Holiday weekend also features supporting acts Kool Thing and Tieranniesaur.

Doors open at 10pm and entry is €5.

The full line-up for Spirit of Folk Festival, which takes place September 21st-23rd at Dunderry Park, Co. Meath has been revealed. This weekend celebrating Irish music, folk, bluegrass and country will feature live performances from John Spillane, The Lost Brothers, Lisa O’Neill, I Draw Slow, Spook Of The Thirteenth Lock, Tucan, The Hot Sprockets, Mossy Nolan, The Henry Girls, The Young Folk, Tir na nOg, Aoife Scott, Jig away the Donkey, Pete Cummins, The Bonny Men, Traz, The Man Whom, Gypsy Rebble Rabble, Bunoscionn, Trad side of the moon, Wookalilly, Alpaca Jamboree, Miriam Donohue, Joy Booth, TAC, Twin Headed Wolf, The Eskies, Cry Monster Cry, Hidden Highways, JP Trio and Niamh. Africa Day Festival takes place May 26th and 27th at George’s Dock and The CHQ building in Dublin. The two days’ festivities will promote African modern and traditional music, dance, food and arts in general, with live performances from 12am to 7pm on two stages. Lineup for this weekend’s Link Culturefest

Link Culturefest is an intercultural arts festival which takes place in Smithfield, Dublin and its surrounding areas from 25th to 27th May this weekend, featuring art exhibitions, international artists exchange from Lisbon and Marseille, visits of the artists studios but also live music events.

On Friday the 25th, Peruvian music band PHISQA plays at St Michan’s Church, drone band Mersk Collective plays The Joinery and The U Bar hosts a special Throwing Shapes after-party.

On Saturday the 26th Trinity Chamber Orchestra plays Radiohead songs with support from OKO at St Michan’s Church.

Finally on Sunday the 27th Marketstudios organise their bimonthly night of performance art Livestock, also Desmond Hogan and Hugh Fitzgerald read at Lilliput Press. All these events are free except Saturday/Sunday gigs. For more information, go to Link Culturefest Facebook page.

Meeting House Square to host love: live music day in Dublin

As part of Love: live music day, Ireland’s national music day which is taking place on June 21st with more than 200 live music events all across the country, the Meeting House Square in Temple Bar, Dublin welcomes a free live event, Lá Ceoil. Performances starting at 6pm include Buffalo in the Castle, We Banjo 3, The Unwanted, Tarab, Mick O’Brien, members of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and DIT Traditional Music Ensemble and Sean Mac Erlaine. Hot Chip just released a Peter Serafinowicz directed video for ‘Night and Day’, the first single of their new album In Our Heads coming out June 8th. It features battling spaceships, people dressed like a weird cult dancing in a mansion with the presence of special guests Terence Stamp, Reggie Watts and Lara Stone. A new set of artists has been announced for All Tomorrow’s Parties festival curated by The National, which takes place in Minehead, UK December 7th-9th.

Bushmills Live, which takes place at the Old Bushmills Distillery in Northern Ireland June 20th and 21st, just got more exciting with the addition of Benjamin Francis Leftwich, Marcus Foster, The Staves, General Fiasco and David C Clements to the line-up.

They join already confirmed acts Snow Patrol, Elijah Wood, Foy Vance and Iain Archer. Tickets for Bushmills Handmade Whiskey and Music Festival are only available via a competition on Facebook where participants had to send a picture of them with a friend and explain why they deserve to go to the festival. Ten pairs of friends in each participating country have been shortlisted to go through to the next stage of the competition, a public vote on Facebook.

Preview: Inside the rehearsals of JD Roots collaborative gig

A few hours before JD Roots gig on Friday night, we got the chance to catch a glimpse of the bands’ rehearsals in Temple Bar, precisely in Temple Lane music studios two steps away from The Button Factory.

As we enter Temple Lane music studios around 5pm this Wednesday, members from Delorentos and We Cut Corners are already at work in a room where you can barely find a space to watch due to the equipment: drum kits, synthesizers, midi keyboard, countless guitars, bass guitars, amplifiers and even a banjo. Conall Ó Breacháin from We Cut Corners is singing a gentle and heartfelt rendition of U2′s classic ballad ‘Stay’ surrounded by the Delorentos concentrated. Ó Breacháin and another (probably Ronàn Yourel, I can’t see him from my vantage point) are sharing the verses and harmonising in the last seconds, with such natural it’s hard to realize at this moment they are not long-time band buddies. Two other rehearsals of the song just to make sure bassist Niall Conlan can cover the melody with a sweet humming and then we take a short pause.

The Minutes arrive and shake a few hands. We hear jokes about who does the best of the work, who is sleeping in the corner, all in good fun, cause it’s easy to see it’s not three bands discovering each other, it’s just a bunch of friends getting along musically and in real life. Then The Delorentos decide to rehearse one of their own song, ‘Bullet in a gun’, and after two tries, Ó Breacháin (from We cut corners) takes place in front of the second drum set and plays with the energetic style anyone who heard him before can imagine, hitting the toms and improvising a bit to fit the whole. Nobody asks questions about him adding up to the band, Conlan even tells him the parts to accentuate and the ones to play soft, and it’s quickly decided that there’s gonna be two drummers on stage for the song. It’s already time to go and leave the men to work. In a short hour we can already tell JD Roots is going to be a well-prepared gig, a night celebrating Irish music but also Dublin music scene of today, made of friendships, musical connections and respect.

Titanic Lockdown Festival cancelled

Next month’s Titanic Lockdown festival in Belfast – due to feature Happy Mondays, New Order, Anna Calvi and more – has been cancelled. A statement from the promoters reads as follows:

Due to poor ticket sales in a challenging economic climate, it is with great regret and disappointment that we must announce the cancellation of the 2012 Titanic Lockdown summer festival. Despite a huge wave of goodwill, ticket sales have been significantly slower than forecast for an event featuring such high profile acts. As a result, it will not be possible to deliver the event.

We would like to offer our sincere thanks to all who have supported, endorsed and believed in the project. In addition, we offer good wishes to all local festival organisers, promoters and artists currently beating the drum for the Arts in Northern Ireland. They make a wonderful contribution to the cultural life of our city in these bleak economic times.

No one is more disappointed than us that the event will not now be taking place, but unfortunately the circumstances are simply beyond our control.

Irish electro-pop singer James O’Neill A.k.A Bitches With Wolves is releasing a new track, ‘No Danger’. The song is heavy on synth bass, with strong intricate drumbeats and even some dubstep influence.

Bitches With Wolves recently decamped to London and this week played support to Scissor Sisters and Little Boots.

Forbidden Fruit stage times announced
