It’s the return of American label Sargent House‘s podcast presented by 2XM’s Niahm Hegarty. This second edition features an interview of Marfred Rodriguez Lopez from Zechs Marquise, talking about his youth living around At The Drive-In and opening for their first reunion gig. There’s also an interview of Marriages, a new band from Red Sparowes members Greg Burns, Emma Ruth Rundle, Dave Clifford and music from Chelsea Wolfe, Big Sir, Tera Melos, Deafheaven and Russian Circles.

Get out your wellies and dust off your suncream because festival season is fast approaching. In this the fourth episode of the newly rejuvenated podcast series, Jules and Laura invite over some friends to State HQ for some nibbles, a few wine spritzers and a chat about all things festival.

Not sure how we did it but as well as music from Casiokids, Kele and Atari Teenage Riot, we also get the lowdown on Roskilde, Electric Picnic, Glastonbury, Download, Castlepalooza, Berlin Fest and more.

So get yourself a nice warm can of beer, a dodgy burger and plop yourself down in some mud – it’s time to start planning your festival summer..

State Podcast #12: SXSW, Villagers, Daedelus, & IAMX

With the long overdue appearance of some sunshine this month, Spring has finally arrived and so too has the third installment in State’s monthly podcast series. Jules and Laura have once again worked tirelessly to bring you this month’s episode, which as well as having a more international feel to it, boasts not one, or two but three musical tracks for your aural pleasure.

First up, we have Laura telling us about her visit to Madrid to catch IAMX as well her strange encounter between Jared (pronounced Jurd!) Leto from 30 Seconds to Mars and her hair.

Jules catches up with the mad professor of electronic music, Daedelus, who was in town this month to pay tribute to Choice Cuts and their brand new choicecuts.com. Check out the video below for a glimpse of the only artist ever, to have successfully married his love of Victorian era fashion, with cutting edge electronic beats.

Then we’re off to Austin, Texas to hear about some of the late-late night adventures from this year’s SXSW festival with our own editor Niall Byrne and The Sunday Tribune’s Una Mullally. Apart from Jules nearly not making it home, Niall’s new love affair with charcoal, a special mention has to go out to Una, who despite breaking her ankle weeks before the trip, still managed to hobble around the festival on crutches and blag her way into plenty of cool parties. Fair play Una!

Finally we finish up this month with a quick word with Conor from Villagers who appears just about ready to take over the world with the upcoming release of his debut album, Becoming a Jackal. With Conor’s recent performance on the Jools Holland Show, rave reviews from the New York Times and NPR in the States, his appearance on this month’s podcast, only confirms just how big a year it’s going to be, for the young Dubliner.

So a little later than usual, it’s the second instalment in the newly revitalised State podcast series. Still looking for that elusive title to the series, Jules and Laura return to bring you music, mindless banter and plenty of interviews with some of the most interesting acts to visit our fair city last month.

First up, it’s the lovely Victoria and Alex from Beach House who speak to us about some of their favourite tracks from their current album, the intoxicating Teen Dream.

Then it’s off to the Academy, where we catch up with Ira from Brooklyn boys done good, Yeasayer. The guys are in the middle of one of their most intense and ambitious tours yet and Ira reveals to us candidly, the realities of life on the road.

Finally, we catch up with this year’s Choice Music Prize winner, the slightly shocked and dazed Adrian Crowley. Speaking backstage to us, half an hour after winning, Adrian tells us of his joy and disbelief at picking up this year’s award as well as ongoing plans for his next release.

All this, plus a sneaky preview of this year’s SXSW fest and music from The Redneck Manifesto, makes for one hell of a jam-packed 35 mins. So ladies and gents, ears at the ready please, as we begin’¦..

At last Spring is with us and to celebrate we’ve decided to kick-start the month with the return of our podcast series. Hosted by Jules Clancy and Laura-Lee Conboy, we’ll attempt to amuse, entertain and captivate you for 30 minutes each month, as we bring you the latest music news, interviews and features, with the occasional tune thrown in for good measure.

With the fifth Choice Music Prize fast approaching, we reflect with inaugural winner Julie Feeney on that memorable night 5 years ago. As debate continues over this year’s shortlist, we hear what kind of impact winning the Choice Music Prize has had on Julie’s career. Laura Lee catches up with Placebo’s new drummer, Steve Forrest, to discuss the band’s brand new single and possibly their poppiest yet, Bright Lights.

Finally we round up the show with State’s own Niall Byrne who gives us his predictions for the acts to listen out for in 2010 like Lonelady, Sleigh Bells, Surfer Blood, Monarchy and Ellie Goulding. All this and an absolutely cracking cover of Del Shannon’s -Runaway’ by Tuam’s So Cow. This track and a host of other covers are available to download for free here.

#9 – Choice Music Prize 2009

Last Wednesday, Ireland’s music masses turned out in force to find out who was to be crowned overall winner of the annual Choice Music Prize. Now in its fourth year, the award has become one of most highly sought after titles, with the winner being judged purely on their music, as opposed to album sales, popularity or even haircuts. This year was probably one of the most impressive shortlists with 2008 proving to be a great year for Irish album releases. But at the end of the night there could only be one winner and as you all probably know by now, that winner was Jape.

State headed down to Vicar Street on the day, to catch up with some of the acts playing later that night. In this special podcast Jules catches up with Fight Like Apes, Messiah J & the Expert, Halfset and of course the man himself, Jape to talk about albums, prize money and meth-clinics. There’s even a special live recording of “Phil Lynott” thrown in at the end for good measure, so check out what all the fuss was about and enjoy.

Julien Clancy’s second half report from CMJ, New York concerns the Irish bands at the festival.

First up is a quick chat with Bressie from The Blizzards who talks about low expectations and having a a drummer with food poisoning who is trying not to get sick on stage during performance. Hooray for Humans get harrassed by an excited fan while Giveamanakick thought they were gonna die during the first song and they made a friend with a Vietnam vet.

Giveamanakick also had high praise for the wonderful Heathers saying of their performance that they “witnessed the start of something huge”. Sisters Louise and Ellie are having the best year ever and after having just started college, they flew out to NY to play CMJ. They tell Julien about writing songs in Irish and their plans for the coming months.

Podcast 07 – State at CMJ 2008

Julien Clancy travelled to New York for the CMJ Music Marathon a few weeks back and in the first of two podcasts focusing on the festival, he talks to some “buzz” bands at the festival including Passion Pit, Marnie Stern and Project Jenny Project Jan. We hear some music from them also!

Next week, Podcast 8 will focus on the Irish bands who played at the festival.

Podcast 06: Oxegen 2008 special

While camped out at Oxegen over the weekend, The State team grabbed a couple of radio presenters and a journalist/blogger to join them in taking stock of the festival thus far. Our discussion took in: Oxegen as the new European festival, the line-up’s good and bad points, someone defending the Counting Crows, why nobody turned up for Richard Hawley, Paul Heaton and Cat Power, Aphex Twin’s mental set on Friday, a look at how the new and Irish bands got on and the inevitable, Amy Winehouse.

Podcast 05: Summer Festivals

With a milliard of festivals happening in Ireland this summer, State asked along seasoned festival goers, a festival hater and an experienced festival musician so they could discuss their festival experiences, the possibility of festival saturation and the joys of slumming it in a field.

Joining us this time around:

John Joe Worrall – Presenter, voice of reason. Seeks enjoyment from watching people hurt themselves at festivals.

Tanya Sweeney – Music journalist and vehement festival-hater. Tell us which festival we should send her to in the comments.

Paul Walsh – Singer with Royseven. Sneaked into Feile ’92. Once, wore white trousers to a festival.

Niall Byrne – Chronic festival attendee. Has attended Witnness through Oxegen for 7 years straight. Sporting a strong cold.

Phil Udell – State editor and experienced festival-goer. Only stays around for 3 songs though.

Warning: There’s loads of bad language, mostly from Tanya’s mouth.

So now that the dust has settled in downtown Austin, Texas and all the bands have gone home, it’s time to ask the Irish artists, industry and journalists about their time at the South by Southwest festival. Three people with different perspectives on the music industry’s coolest music (and more) showcase joined us for the SXSW festival.

Joining the State Podcast were Jamie (aka Pockets) of Fight Like Apes, Angela Dorgan of First Music Contact, State’s reporter in Texas Johnnie Craig, SXSW-envious web editor Niall Byrne and presenter JJ Worrall (of the Okey Doke Football blog).

The conversation revolved around how the Irish acts fared, convention centre geopolitics, the bands, the best venues, Zane Lowe, how FMC picks the Irish bands and and other SXSW-related nuggets.
